In addition to light, nitrogen, phosphate, trace elements etc., CO2 is the most important nutrient for plants in an aquarium and, when dosed correctly, CO2 can regulate the pH value. The stronger and healthier the plants are, the more oxygen they produce (which the fish need to breathe) and the less chance algae has to grow.
